In February 2023, the Hull Daily Mail and Hull Live featured Hull Sisters to spotlight both our international humanitarian efforts and the critical need for long-term security at our local hub.
The coverage focused on an incredible project organized by our service users and volunteers: collecting, packing, and preparing a large shipping container filled with essential clothing and household items donated by the public across the UK to support displaced women and children affected by the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Even while navigating their own hardships in Hull, the women at our centre demonstrated immense solidarity with families enduring conflict and displacement overseas.
Alongside this achievement, reporter Emily Johnson detailed the everyday lifelines provided inside our building—from free English classes and legal advice to fresh fruit, baby formula, and period products distributed during the height of the cost-of-living crisis. The feature also underscored the challenges associated with our short-term council lease, emphasizing that secure premises are vital for unlocking long-term funding and providing an uninterrupted safe sanctuary for more than 600 vulnerable women.
Public features like this demonstrate the generosity of our community while reminding local stakeholders that grassroots organisations need permanent stability to continue their vital frontline work.
