Health & Wellbeing

Health & Wellbeing

Hull Sisters delivers a comprehensive programme of health education, preventative awareness workshops, and wellbeing activities  designed to improve health outcomes and empower women and girls to make informed decisions about their own care.

Counselling Services

Our counselling provision offers trauma-informed, culturally sensitive support to women experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, and the psychological impact of abuse or displacement. Sessions are delivered in a safe and confidential environment where women can process difficult experiences without judgement.

Through structured therapeutic approaches, women develop coping strategies, rebuild confidence, and strengthen emotional regulation. Many report improved sleep, reduced panic symptoms, and greater capacity to manage family and daily responsibilities.

Mental Health Support

Women from global majority backgrounds often struggle to share their mental health experiences with other services due to a lack of cultural understanding. To support them, we provide tailored mental health support that is culturally sensitive and accessible.

We are currently working towards formal approval from NOCN to offer mental health qualifications specifically designed for women from the global majority — a significant step in building long-term mental health capacity within our community.

Wellbeing Workshops

Our wellbeing workshops take a holistic approach, addressing emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing simultaneously. Sessions include stress management, self-care strategies, mindfulness practices, and confidence-building activities. Women gain practical tools to manage anxiety, build resilience, and prioritise their health.

Art & Craft Therapy

Creative sessions provide therapeutic outlets for women who may struggle to verbalise trauma. Through painting, crafts, and other artistic activities, participants express emotions in non-verbal ways, reducing stress and improving mood. These sessions also promote social bonding and build informal support networks.

Sewing, Knitting & Painting Classes

Our sewing classes cater to women of all skill levels, offering a chance to learn or enhance sewing abilities. Some of the women are already proficient and actively help others, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can grow. These classes enable participants to create clothing and home essentials while expressing their creativity. Service Users start by enrolling on a beginner’s course and then progress to more advanced classes. This foundational class provides the essential skills needed for pattern cutting and turning design ideas into reality.

Yoga & Zumba Classes

We provide women-only yoga and Zumba classes to promote overall wellness. Yoga supports physical, mental, and emotional health, offering benefits such as improved blood circulation, greater joint mobility, increased energy, and emotional balance. Zumba classes support mental health by offering a space where women can lift their mood, boost energy, and feel a sense of community through movement.

Body Image Sessions

We delivered a series of body image sessions focusing on the intense societal pressures around body image faced by women and young girls. This workshop provided a safe space for women to share their personal experiences and reflect on how these pressures have impacted their lives. Participants were encouraged to embrace the beauty and uniqueness of all body types.

By focusing on the diverse interpretations of a "beautiful body" and addressing the impact of stereotypes on confidence, we provided a meaningful platform for women, especially mothers, to reflect on body image and equip their daughters with healthier self-perceptions.

Massage and Reflexology

Hull Sisters offer free massage and reflexology sessions to further support the mental health and well-being of women in our community. Taking place every Thursday, these sessions offer a safe, calming space where women can relax under the care of a professional therapist.

Sandra, a therapist at Hull Sisters, regularly visits to offer support to women who have faced judgment from others. Her unwavering positive regard creates a safe environment, encouraging clients to open up about issues they may have previously repressed. This support is invaluable to the women at Hull Sisters.

Please book your appointment in advance to avoid disappointment.

Health Surgeries

Since 2013, we have been providing consistent and culturally sensitive support to women of colour around a wide range of health-related issues. Our aim is to reduce health inequalities, improve awareness, and empower women to make informed decisions about their wellbeing. We regularly organise health surgeries and awareness sessions in partnership with local organisations, including NHS services, specialist health providers, and private GPs. These collaborations enable us to offer accessible, trusted, and relevant support within a safe and welcoming environment.

Our health programmes cover a broad range of important topics, including:

  • Cancer awareness and early detection
  • Hepatitis and sexual health clinics
  • Breast screening awareness
  • Menopause awareness and support
  • Cervical cancer awareness
  • Personal hygiene and wellbeing workshops

Through these sessions, we not only provide vital information but also create opportunities for women to ask questions, share experiences, and access further support. Our approach ensures that women feel heard, respected, and confident in managing their health.

Food Bank

Hull Sisters provides a food bank service to support individuals experiencing poverty and financial hardship. We collect surplus food from local food stores and Fare Share Hull, which is then distributed to those in need within the community. We also offer Caned food, baby food and essentials, hygiene products, sanitary items, and other household essentials to reduce the pressure on our users and improve health and well-being.

Healthy Eating

We provide regular healthy eating sessions to support our users in improving their diets and leading healthier lives. These sessions are designed to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition and its impact on overall wellbeing.

Women come together to share and prepare a variety of recipes from different cultures, creating a space for learning, connection, and practical skills development. Through these activities, participants gain a better understanding of how to make healthier food choices while still enjoying familiar and culturally relevant meals.

Our sessions also highlight how healthy eating can help prevent and manage a range of health conditions, including diabetes, kidney and liver disease, obesity, and heart-related illnesses.

By combining knowledge, cultural exchange, and hands-on experience, we empower women to take positive steps towards healthier lifestyles for themselves and their families.

Community Meals

We provide freshly cooked lunches daily, serving over 99 women and children in a day. These meals are culture-centred and ensure access to nutritious food while creating a welcoming, inclusive environment. Beyond addressing hunger, community meals reduce social isolation, encourage peer connection, and create informal opportunities for women and girls to share experiences and support one another. For many, this daily gathering represents a vital sense of belonging and emotional safety.

Baking Class

The baking programme at Hull Sisters is done once a week. We teach practical cooking skills while introducing basic enterprise concepts. Women learn how to prepare affordable, healthier homemade options and explore pathways to small-scale income generation. This initiative promotes both improved nutrition and economic empowerment.

Confidential Support Sessions

Our confidential support sessions provide personalised, one-to-one guidance for women facing health challenges, particularly during times of crisis or ongoing hardship. These sessions offer a safe and trusted space where women can openly discuss their concerns and receive tailored support.

Our trained staff provide advocacy, emotional support, and practical advice, ensuring that women’s health needs are taken seriously—especially in cases where they have experienced barriers, neglect, or difficulty accessing appropriate healthcare for themselves and their families.

We work closely with relevant health services to help women navigate the healthcare system, access the right support, and ensure their voices are heard. Where needed, we also provide referrals to specialist agencies for further care and assistance.

Confidence Building Through Group Support

We deliver structured awareness sessions on women’s health-related illnesses, while also discussing issues that affect their health and wellbeing. As a result of these challenges, many women experience a loss of self-esteem and confidence.

By highlighting different issues and shared experiences within the group, we encourage women to speak up and support one another. This approach helps to build confidence and improve overall health and wellbeing.

Women gain knowledge about their legal rights and local support pathways. These sessions build confidence, reduce stigma, and encourage early intervention. Participants report feeling better informed and more able to seek help when necessary.

Coffee Morning and Drop-ins

At Hull Sisters, we regularly host coffee mornings from Monday to Thursday to welcome newcomers into a warm, supportive community. These gatherings provide a valuable space for women to connect with our staff and with others from similar backgrounds, fostering strong, supportive relationships.

Crèche for Children

Hull Sisters proudly offers a dedicated children's room, ensuring that mothers and their children enjoy a safe and engaging environment. On-site childcare removes one of the most significant barriers preventing our women from accessing services. By providing a safe and nurturing environment for children, mothers can fully engage in counselling, workshops, and training sessions without interruption or anxiety.

Experiencing domestic violence or other forms of abuse can take a serious toll on your mental health. Many women and girls face anxiety, depression, trauma, or post-traumatic stress as a result of abuse. We provide one-to-one counselling and mental health support in a safe, confidential, and culturally sensitive environment.
