In May 2023, national television broadcaster Channel 4 News visited Hull Sisters to film an extensive, in-depth feature for their special investigative report titled “Britain on the Brink.” The broadcast focused national attention on how compounding economic pressures, soaring inflation, and utility hikes disproportionately affect minoritised women, single mothers, and vulnerable families across Hull.
The news team spent the entire day inside our community hub, speaking directly with service users and documenting the everyday challenges facing our community. The report provided a sensitive, unfiltered platform for women of colour to articulate the lived realities of food and fuel poverty, housing instability, and domestic vulnerability. A crucial focus of the segment addressed the severe destitution experienced by mothers with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF), who are entirely excluded from the statutory welfare safety net during periods of severe financial hardship.
The feature also highlighted the essential frontline intervention delivered by Hull Sisters. Viewers across the country saw our centre operating as a vital sanctuary, distributing emergency food parcels, essential hygiene supplies, and baby milk while providing one-to-one casework, legal clinics, and emotional support. The coverage made clear that grassroots, culturally informed spaces are not merely supplementary services, but irreplaceable lifelines keeping families afloat during national crises.
Securing prominent coverage on Channel 4 News ensures that the systemic inequalities faced by the global majority of women in our region remain visible to nationwide audiences, policymakers, and civic leaders.
