Creativity, cultural celebration, and practical skill-building united at the Hull Sisters 2023 Annual Event, marked by the debut of our special fashion initiative: “From Scrap to Style.”
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, Hull Sisters received an extraordinary donation of large fabric rolls, trims, and tailoring accessories from the London Customs Department, alongside surplus material from the local Scrap Store. Rather than letting these materials go unused, women participating in our sewing and crocheting workshops turned the donation into a vibrant design project.
Drawing upon their training and cultural heritage, the women designed, cut, and stitched stunning bespoke garments, headwear, and accessories for themselves and event performers. The final collection bridged diverse cultural traditions with sustainable design, showcasing impressive tailoring skills developed over hundreds of classroom hours inside our centre.
The completed outfits were worn during our outdoor annual gathering, which welcomed more than 1,000 women, children, and community supporters. Filled with live drumming, traditional dancing, children’s activities, and shared food, the celebration was a joyful reflection of community resilience and empowerment.
