Accessing timely, culturally competent healthcare remains one of the most significant challenges facing minoritised women and families across our city. Language barriers, complex appointment booking systems, digital exclusion, and systemic distrust often prevent women from seeking essential medical attention until minor concerns become serious health crises.
To break down these systemic barriers, Hull Sisters has embedded vital primary care services directly inside our centre in collaboration with the City Health Care Partnership (CHCP).
Every Monday, our hub hosts an on-site GP surgery staffed by healthcare professionals from CHCP practices, including The Quays, Kingston Medical Centre, Riverside, The Octagon, and East Park. Holding consultations within our women-only environment enables service users to access professional medical assessments in a familiar, welcoming, and confidential setting. Multilingual staff and peer advocates are present to assist with communication, ensuring patient concerns are clearly conveyed and fully addressed.
In addition to regular GP surgeries, Hull Sisters operates specialized health initiatives designed to protect vulnerable women and children:
- Dedicated Midwife Clinics: Delivering essential maternity and antenatal healthcare, maternal education, and baby wellbeing checks for vulnerable pregnant women, including those living in temporary accommodation or navigating asylum claims.
- Confidential Health Screenings: Partnering with specialist medical teams (such as Dr. Vicky and Vinnie) to provide free, accessible on-site testing for Hepatitis C and HIV.
- Specialist Wellbeing Workshops: Hosting community health providers like Evolve to lead informative, stigma-free workshops addressing eating disorders and mental health awareness.
By bringing clinical care to where our community already feels safe and supported, Hull Sisters delivers over 1,000 health interventions a year ensuring that every woman, regardless of legal status or background, receives the dignified healthcare she deserves.
