Food Poverty

Hull is ranked as the 6th most deprived local authority area in the UK, and the impact of poverty is felt most severely by women, girls, and children from Black and ethnic minority communities. These communities already face structural inequality, racism, and exclusion, and women experience a multiple layers of poverty that remain largely invisible in mainstream statistics and policy responses.

The primary service users supported by Hull Sisters are Black and ethnic minority women and their children. Among the 3,000 women currently supported, 83% are experiencing food poverty. Culturally appropriate food such as halal meat and traditional staples is often significantly more expensive and difficult to access through mainstream food banks.
