Economic abuse and financial dependency are among the most pervasive barriers preventing women from escaping domestic violence and deep poverty. For many minoritised women, statutory welfare payments are routed exclusively through a male partner’s account, leaving mothers without direct funds to purchase essential groceries, pay transport fares, or meet emergency children’s needs.
To break this cycle, Hull Sisters launched a groundbreaking collaborative initiative in partnership with the Hull City Council Welfare and Inclusion Department.
For the first time in the city, hundreds of vulnerable women were provided with direct supermarket and essential living vouchers, bypassing traditional mediation or partner accounts. Of the recipients supported through this targeted programme, 93% were single mothers navigating extreme financial hardship.
Providing funds directly into women’s hands delivers immediate financial autonomy. Beneficiaries were able to cover vital household necessities, infant formula, and utility pre-payments on their own terms, restoring dignity and decision-making power during crisis periods.
This innovative scheme marks a progressive shift in local welfare delivery, proving that direct, barrier-free financial assistance is essential to dismantling systemic poverty and protecting women and children across Hull.
