Building a sustainable future for community support requires investing in the next generation of social advocates, practitioners, and researchers. Hull Sisters has expanded its formal academic collaborations, hosting student placements and volunteering roles in partnership with key educational institutions across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
Through close partnerships with the University of Hull, University of Lincoln, Hull College, East Riding College, St Mary’s College, and Hymers College, students join our frontline team across a range of specialized disciplines. Placement roles span fields such as gender studies, human rights, social care, healthcare, psychology, education, film and media, and community-based research.
These placements provide students with invaluable hands-on experience, moving beyond textbook theory to understand the complex realities facing minoritised women and children. Under the guidance of our staff, students engage directly in:
- Assisting with day-to-day casework, language support, and welfare advocacy.
- Supporting classroom delivery in ESOL, digital literacy, and life-skills workshops.
- Documenting community impact through research presentations, videos, and visual reports.
- Assisting with essential administrative workflows, bid research, and community outreach.
In turn, our academic partners provide vital capacity that helps Hull Sisters deliver consistent, high-quality care to more than 1,000 service users each year. By bridging grassroots action with higher education, we ensure future sector leaders enter the workforce equipped with cultural competence, empathy, and firsthand understanding of community resilience.
