In November 2023, students from the University of Hull completed a collaborative placement with Hull Sisters, culminating in a dedicated workshop presentation that captured our daily frontline mission.
As part of their academic placement in social sciences and community welfare, the students created an extensive research poster titled “It’s Not a Charity, It’s a Sisterhood,” alongside an accompanying video. Their work examined the systemic issues addressed by our organisation, including social inequality, domestic abuse recovery, power imbalances in funding, and mental health support for women from the global majority.
The presentation highlighted direct testimonies from service users who found safety, friendship, and practical skills through our sewing, ESOL, yoga, and emergency foodbank provisions. By examining the lived-experience model that defines our centre, the students demonstrated how grassroots community care bridges critical gaps left by statutory public services.
Collaborations with higher education institutions like the University of Hull provide emerging practitioners with invaluable frontline experience while documenting the lasting positive change generated inside our centre every day.
